(Redirected from Zettai Bōei Leviathan)

Leviathan is a 2009 novel written by Scott Westerfeld and illustrated by Keith Thompson. First of a trilogy set in alternative version of World War I, it has Central Powers (known in-universe as 'Clankers') using mechanized war machines opposed by Entente Powers (as 'Darwinists') who fabricate living creatures genetically. The central protagonists are Aleksander, son of Archduke Franz. Foundation is the first ongoing comics series set in the Mass Effect series and is the first series to be scripted by Walters on his own; Walters had worked on some of the franchise's mini-series prior to Foundation, and was responsible for reviewing other writers' contributions to the script. Walters noted that he was able to fully commit to a longer series with the release of Mass Effect 3.

Reception[edit]

Carl Kimlinger of Anime News Network gave the series an overall C+ rating.[8] He gave credit to both director Kenichi Yatani and the character designs of Takaharu Okuma for crafting a light-hearted adventure with an 'intensely cute' female cast that delivers a 'pleasing dry sense of humor' but found it throwaway with its ongoing story using 'musty RPG plotting' and its overall charm being a detriment to itself, saying 'That frothiness is both Leviathan's great strength and its ultimate weakness. It's effortlessly fun to watch, but also about as memorable as, well, something that I can't quite remember right now.'[8] Stig Høgset, writing for THEM Anime Reviews, heavily criticized the series for being a poor adaptation of a fantasy RPG game that puts an overreliance on moe designs and fanservice, while the overall plot and characters get little development to engage viewers, concluding that its 'A failure in every single aspect of what makes a show good, and I've seen a lot of relatively average fantasy anime that at least managed to be entertaining.'[9]

Development and release[edit]

Lostwood Games started to develop the game in 2012. Andrey Kniazev, the leader of the Russian team that created the game, spent $150,000 to develop Leviathan. Due to the themes of homosexuality and the current state of LGBT rights in Russia, the team initially had a hard time finding a publisher. However, they did find a publisher for the Nintendo 3DS and PlayStation Vita versions, but they lacked the money to make a port.[1] The game features an opening song, composed by Gleb Kolyadin and Mikhail Kotov, and performed by Nikita Valamin and Maryana Semkina.[2] The original Russian game has been translated into English and German. The German translations of the first two episodes by Marcel Weyers were released in August 2013.[3] In May 2014, they launched a crowdfunding project on Indiegogo to fund the final episode.[4] Funding failed with the game only receiving $195 of the $49,500 goal. Nonetheless, the still want to create the last episode and finish the translations for episode 4 and 5. The game was released on Steam on November 11, 2014.[5] In November 2015, they launched another crowdfunding project on Indiegogo with a goal of $2,000 in order to finish the English translation of the last episode. Funding failed again with the game only receiving $429. [6]

Reception[edit]

Sequel[edit]

In October 2015, the developers announced Leviathan: The Cargo, which continues the story set in the world of Leviathan. The visual novel game features characters from Leviathan: The Last Day of the Decade and new ones. The game is set to be released in 2016.[7]
